Minister Gašić lays wreath at Avala Monument to mark Statehood Day

Acting as an envoy of the Serbian President and Supreme Commander Aleksandar Vučić, Minister of Defence Bratislav Gašić, accompanied by the Chief of the Serbian Armed Forces General Staff, General Milan Mojsilović, and Guard Commander Brigadier General Željko Furundžić, laid a wreath today at the Monument to the Unknown Hero on Mt. Avala to mark Serbia’s Statehood Day – Sretenje (Candlemas).
Following the wreath-laying ceremony, accompanied by the Honour Guard and the playing of the national anthem, Minister Gašić wrote the following message in the monument’s guestbook:

“Free, persistent and brave. Serbs are a nation that, thanks to their spiritual strength and willpower, has never been broken, despite numerous attempts throughout history.

Bowing to the shadows of you who once defended the honour and freedom of the Serbian people and the state, today we preserve your legacy by proudly carrying the national symbols of the Republic of Serbia.

Rest in peace.

Long live free and constitutional Serbia!”
Serbia commemorates Sretenje - Statehood Day in memory of February 15, 1804, when the First Serbian Uprising started and when the Sretenje Constitution, Serbia’s first modern constitution, was adopted in 1835.
