Collective training in SAF CBRN units
Members of the 246th CBRN Battalion are conducting regular training at the Car Lazar Barracks and Ravnjak Training Area in Kruševac.
This is part of professional members’ collective training, which all battalion members are going through in order to maintain and improve their skills in carrying out the tasks critical to the mission and consistent with the unit’s purpose.
In this phase, the personnel is practicing techniques and procedures for performing CBRN control and decontamination in response to the use of weapons of mass destruction or CBRN incidents.
The training process uses equipment that ensures full protection of personnel while working with contaminants, as well as detection, dosimetry and decontamination tools, the most important of which is the domestically produced MPD-09 mobile decontamination platform.
Commander of the 246th CBRN Battalion Lt. Col. Miroslav Stankovski stresses the importance of training the members of this tactical Army unit for timely planning, organization and implementation of special CBRN countermeasures.
— Training is the battalion’s priority task. It aims to fulfil the unit’s mission, and the persons in charge of the task are squad leaders and platoon commanders, while more complex tasks require the involvement of company commanders as well – says Lt. Col. Stankovski.
The trainer, Cap. Miljan Stefanov, explains that the training is divided into two separate segments – CBRN reconnaissance units training and decontamination units training.
— CBRN reconnaissance units training involves practicing the procedures used in monitoring for nuclear and chemical attacks, reconnaissance of the routes and areas of contamination of the soil, as well as chemical and radiometric lab analyses. Decontamination units training involves practical lessons at the CBRN decontamination station, where the trainees practice the removal of radiological, chemical and biological contaminants from the surface of peoples’ bodies, armament and motor vehicles that have been affected by weapons of mass destruction – emphasized Cap. Stefanov.
The successful execution of training, which is carried out throughout the year in the 246th CBRN Battalion, helps professional unit members improve their skills in performing specific tasks in SAF operations, as well as their readiness to provide support to civilian authorities in mitigating the impacts of technological and other disasters.
