Memorial Plaque to soldier Željko Gligorić unveiled



A memorial plaque to soldier Željko Gligorić, who was killed in battle against Albanian terrorists in 1999, was unveiled today in the village of Metlić near Šabac.

The monument to the fallen soldier was unveiled by State Secretary at the Ministry of Labour, Employment, Veterans and Social Affairs Zoran Antic, Head of Defence Minister's Private Office Brigadier General Goran Momčilović, Mayor of Šabac Aleksandar Pajić and brother of the fallen soldier Boško Gligorić.
 
The clergy of the Church of the Transfiguration of the Lord in Krivaja consecrated the memorial plaque and served a memorial service to soldier Gligorić and the fallen soldiers of the village of Metlić.

After the unveiling, wreaths and flowers were laid at the memorial plaque by a delegation from the Ministry of Defence and the Serbian Armed Forces, led by Brigadier General Momčilović, followed by State Secretary Antic, members of the Gligorić family, representatives of the City of Šabac, local government, embassies and numerous associations that cherish the tradition of remembering the fighters who fell for the freedom of the homeland.

Željko Gligorić was born in Šabac, on 30th December 1977. He joined the 549th Motorized Brigade in 1998 to serve his military service. He was seriously wounded in a battle with Albanian terrorists in the Orahovac region, on 30th March 1999, and died the next day at the Niš Medical Centre. He was posthumously awarded the Order of Merit in the Field of Defence and Security, First Class.
