Minister Gašić attends remembrance ceremony for Surdulica martyrs



Minister of Defence Bratislav Gašić attended today a remembrance ceremony for the Surdulica martyrs and laid a wreath at the place of their death in Duboka Dolina near Surdulica.
During the wreath-laying ceremony, Minister Gašić was accompanied by Brigadier General Goran Momčilović and Brigadier General Zoran Dragićević.

The holy liturgy in the Church of the Holy Great Martyr George was celebrated by His Holiness Profirije, Serbian Patriarch, together with the bishops of the Serbian Orthodox Church and the clergy of the Diocese of Vranje. After the liturgy, Patriarch Porfirije led the procession from the Church of the Holy Great Martyr George to Duboka Dolina, where several thousand Serbs were killed during the First World War.
On behalf of the Government of the Republic of Serbia, a wreath was laid by Minister of Labour, Employment, Veteran and Social Affairs Nemanja Starović. Wreaths were also laid by Minister for Family Care and Demography Milica Đurđević Stamenkovski, Minister without portfolio Novica Tončev, representatives of the Pčinja Administrative District, the municipality of Surdulica and associations fostering the traditions of liberation wars.
Duboka Dolina is located at the entrance to Surdulica and is one of the symbols of the suffering of Serbs in the Great War. The number of victims killed at this location is estimated at several thousand.
