Serbian Minister of Defence meets with German counterpart
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence Miloš Vučević met with the Minister of Defence of the Federal Republic of Germany, Boris Pistorius, in the Guard Club in Topčider today.
Following a formal welcoming ceremony performed by the Serbian Armed Forces Guard and playing the national anthems, ministers Vučević and Pistorius had a tete-a-tete, and the two countries’ delegations held a meeting.
At the meeting, Minister Vučević and his German counterpart discussed political and security situation in the region and beyond, and they also had the opportunity to consider at a strategic level modalities to continue cooperation in the field of defence.
According to Minister Vučević, stability and prosperity are of immense importance for the two countries and in this regard, a regular and intensive high-level political dialogue is maintained. Bilateral relations between the two countries are developed in all areas, he said, and both sides are committed to improving them further.
During the conversation today, Minister Vučević emphasized Serbia’s long-term strategic commitment to remaining neutral, as well as its determination to continue working on the strengthening of the defence cooperation with all countries and international organizations, in accordance with its national interests and foreign policy priorities.
Minister Vučević told his German counterpart that deep concern was felt in Serbia about the situation in Kosovo and Metohija, particularly about the safety of the Serb population in the north of the Province, following a series of utterly irresponsible moves made by the provisional Priština institutions. The Serbian side remains committed to the dialogue as the only way to address all issues in order to provide a better life for all the citizens of Kosovo and Metohija, he added.
As for the defence cooperation with the Federal Republic of Germany, Minister Vučević said that there was still room for improvement in both quality and quantity, to the benefit of both parties.
Minister Vučević stressed the importance of cooperation in the sphere of education and training, while according to him, the most significant aspect of cooperation in the military-economic field is cooperation with AIRBUS and the procurement of its H-145M helicopters.
Minister Pistorius thanked Minister Vučević for the chance to discuss various topics with him today. He underlined the importance of regional stability and spoke about the promotion of cooperation in areas of mutual interest. The German minister of defence also emphasized that keeping peace and preventing crises were necessary steps for the Western Balkan to join the European Union.
