Guardian of Serbian Military Cemetery Đorđe Mihailović Buried with Military Honours
Today, at the military cemetery Zeitenlik in Thessaloniki, a delegation of the Ministry of Defence and Serbian Armed Forces, led by State Secretary in the Ministry of Defence Mile Jelić, attended the burial of Đorđe Mihailović, the guardian of military cemetery where rest Serbian heroes and martyrs of the Albanian Golgotha.
President of the Republika Srpska Milorad Dodik also attended the burial, held with military honours of the Serbian Armed Forces Guard, together with Minister of Labour, Employment, Veteran and Social Affairs Nikola Selaković, representatives of Greek Government and military, relatives and numerous admirers.
Đorđe Mihailović was born in Thessaloniki on 1st May 1928. For more than a half of a century, he was welcoming and seeing off the descendants of Serbian warriors fallen in the Thessaloniki Front in the First World War. He showed them the places where the bones of their ancestors had been buried, and he guarded the graves of thousands of warriors who had been interred there. He spent his life as a guarding of the cemetery, as no less than the third generation of guardians from his family. He performed that duty until May 2022 when he retired because of his declining health.
He was decorated for long-lasting dedication with the Order of the Serbian Flag of the Second Degree, Order of Saint Sava of the First Degree, and in 2012, he received a Military Commemorative Medal for exceptional contribution to the system of defence.
He died on 2nd July 2023 in his 96th year.
