Training in Terrain Vehicle Driving in Peacekeeping Operations

This week, members of the Serbian Armed Forces who are preparing for the duties of motor vehicle drivers in United Nations peacekeeping operation in Lebanon are undergoing additional driving training on a specialised field training area.

The aim of the training, which is being conducted in Serbian Armed Forces Transportation Service training battalion in Kraljevo, is for the military drivers to acquire the skills for safe operation of light off-road motor vehicles on impassable terrains, and to be competent in maintaining the accompanying devices and systems.

The first part of the training consisted of theory and driving training on public roads, while the most demanding portion of the training is currently in progress – the operation of a vehicle on off-road terrain on the training area built in accordance with United Nations standards and on the basis of experience of Serbian Armed Forces members gained in peacekeeping operations. By overcoming a demanding forest track and different natural and artificial obstacles on the training area, the military drivers master driving techniques even for the most difficult situations, which put to test both their driving skills and technical capabilities of the vehicle.

The skills that they acquire in the Transportation Service training battalion will be of immeasurable value in Lebanon, given that because of the nature of the task performed by our contingent in the area of operation, they will often be in a situation to operate motor vehicles off-road. Apart from the drivers, members of the Serbian Armed Forces who are assigned to military observers and staff officers positions in peacekeeping missions undergo the additional training in terrain vehicle driving as well.
