As part of commemoration ceremonies to mark the Beginning of the Second World War Remembrance Day, a documentary entitled “They Defended the Sky of the Fatherland” will premiere on Radio Television of Serbia tonight at 10 p.m. The film was produced by the “Zastava Film” Military Film Centre, Public Relation Department, Ministry of Defence.
During the war, hundreds of airmen, members of both fighter and bomber air force, took part in the air battles fought from April 6 to 16, 1941. The documentary is about the resistance, struggle and self-sacrifice of more than 130 airmen of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, who put up unexpectedly strong and determined resistance against the Nazi aggressors in April 1941.
Although decades have passed since then, little is known or said about those events, and only the eleven pilots who were killed defending Belgrade are mentioned nowadays.
The screenplay was written by Budimir Potočan, PhD, Politika’s journalist who was researching this topic for 35 years, it was directed by Prof. Dragoljub Elčić, produced by Colonel Goran Ikonić, and the film narrator is the actor Aleksandar Lazić.
