Military school students: What connects us is our love of science, sports and our country

The Military Grammar School has been providing education to young men for decades, and for a few years now to girls as well, who will one day enrol in the Military Academy and become officers of the Serbian Armed Forces. On the other hand, the Secondary Vocational Military School provides education to future non-commissioned officers. However, many students who attend these two schools often go beyond the curriculum, playing sports and doing art, and often compete with their peers from civilian schools in knowledge and skills.  Predrag, Anđela and Marko are young and ambitious people determined to become officers and non-commissioned officers of the Serbian Armed Forces, who have managed to keep a perfect balance between their school tasks, talents and needs characteristic of people their age. Their message to future secondary school students is that military schools are the right choice for everyone who shares their passion for science, sports, but also love for their country.

Predrag Đuričić from Sremska Mitrovica is a fourth-year student at the Military Grammar School and he sees himself as an officer in the Serbian Armed Forces. He is preparing for the Military Academy entrance exam, and the field he takes special interest in is military electronic engineering. Such a choice is not surprising because Predrag loves natural sciences, especially mathematics, as evidenced by his participation in numerous competitions.  - Every year, I participate in the city-level mathematics competition, and this year I have qualified for the state competition, which will be held in May. I am preparing for the competition in regular classes, and those who need additional preparation, can attend supplementary classes. The school encourages scientific research and sends students to the Petnica Science Centre every year. In the second and third years, I attended a geography programme there, and last year I won the second prize at the state competition in that field - says Đuričić.

Predrag does gymnastics and military pentathlon. He adds that the school provides students with opportunities to play sports and points out that with good organization, everything can be achieved.

- There was a Military Pentathlon Competition in Hungary. Last year, the first International Cadet Cup was held and it was a beautiful experience. Military pentathlon consists of five events: running, shooting, obstacle running, grenade throwing and swimming, and we also had two additional events - topography and first aid. This year, we are preparing for the second cadet cup on Lake Balaton, Hungary - explains the future Military Grammar School graduate.

Anđela Mladenović enrolled in the Military Grammar School last year, and her success is proof that one can be equally successful in natural and social sciences, but also in sports. She is considering enrolling in the Military Medical Academy’s Medical Faculty one day.

- I took second place at the municipal physics competition and qualified for the district competition, and as far as the Serbian language is concerned, I have also secured a place at the Writing Olympics, because I participated in the state competition in the eighth grade. I also took third place in the municipal grammar competition and qualified for the district competition. Here I also do gymnastics, which I started doing in the first grade in elementary school. I try to finish all my homework during the study hours, and I play sports in the evening in sports club and in the Sports Centre - says Anđela.

Marko Petrović is a first-year student attending the Air Force and Air Defence profile at the Secondary Vocational Military School. He says that this school was his first choice and that he did not have a dilemma which school to enrol in. Marko took the first place at the municipal physics competition, and will compete at the city-level. He says that attending military schools has numerous advantages.  - The advantage is that schooling, books, accommodation and food are free, with a guaranteed job in the end. The best students can apply for the Military Academy and advance in their careers. Everything we learn here, we will be able to use later in life. If my academic achievement is excellent, I will try to enrol in the Military Academy - says Petrović, who will become a non-commissioned officer in the Serbian Armed Forces at the end of his schooling.

Brave, courageous and ambitious boys and girls who would like to follow in the footsteps of Predrag, Anđelina and Marko, can apply for a place at the Military Grammar School and "1,300 Corporals" Secondary Vocational Military School in Belgrade until March 31.
