Minister Stefanović presents Ambassador of Israel with archives about Jewish suffering in Independent State of Croatia
Today, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence Nebojša Stefanović, PhD, met with the Ambassador of Israel to Serbia Yahel Vilan, whom he presented with a hard disk containing digital copies of archival material about the persecution and suffering of Jews in the Independent State of Croatia during the Second World War. Minister Stefanović said that the cooperation between the Military Archive and Yad Vashem – the Holocaust Remembrance Centre is very important and contributes to strengthening overall relations between the two countries, based on the historical closeness of the Serbian and Jewish people who shared the same terrible fate during the Second World War.
According to Minister Stefanović, the disk containing more than 162,000 digitized pages of archival material gathered by the Military Archive serves to document and keep alive the memory of the victims of fascism, so that new generations would not forget what happened, but also to prevent shameful attempts at relativizing crimes committed during the Second World War. Ambassador Vilan thanked Minister Stefanović saying that the cooperation between the Military Archive and the Yad Vashem Centre is extremely important for Israel. According to him, it is important to save historical facts from oblivion and not to allow the rewriting of history, so that crimes would not happen again.
Minister Stefanović and Ambassador Vilan also discussed defence cooperation between the two countries, which, according to them is good, but there still room for improvement.
