Remains of General Stratimirović buried
Today, members of the Ministry of Defence and the Serbian Armed Forces took part in the burial of the remains of General Đorđe Stratimirović, the commander of Serbian volunteers from Šajkaška. The burial ceremony was held in Sremski Karlovci with full military honours.
His remains, transferred from Vienna, where he was originally buried in 1908, were buried in the monastery of the Entry of the Most Holy Mother of God into the Temple, thus fulfilling the general's last wish, which he expressed in his memoirs entitled "Memories" just before his death.
During the ceremony, members of the Serbian Armed Forces Guard took out the coffin with the remains of General Stratimirović in front of the Karlovac Cathedral, followed by a liturgy through Sremski Karlovci.
General Đorđe Stratimirović was the commander of the Serbian volunteers from Šajkaška. Together, they won the first and most important Serbian victory over the more numerous and better equipped Hungarian army on June 12, 1848 in this town, thus preserving Serbian Vojvodina, which they had proclaimed at the May Assembly on May 2 of the same year.
After retiring from the military, in 1859, General Stratimirović participated in Austrian diplomatic missions in Montenegro, Corfu, Epirus, Serbia and Italy. He moved from Novi Sad to Vienna in 1877, where he spent the rest of his life.
