The Serbia Armed Forces Installed Pontoon Bridge to Lido Beach
Members of the First Pontoneer Battalion of the River Flotilla installed a pontoon bridge across the Danube River thus connecting the city beach Lido on the Great War Island with Zemun segment of the bank. In that way, the Serbian Armed Forces cheered up the citizens of Belgrade who got used to seeking refreshment during the hottest summer days on the beach of “Zemun seaside” where the swimming season will officially start on Friday, 3rd July.
Military pontoneers, who have been, for years, bridging the Danube River for the inhabitants of Zemun, represent a unique symbol of the beginning of summer, which will, in case of Lido beach, last until the beginning of September. Many have already taken the opportunity to take a walk or ride bicycle to the Great War Island.
The pontoon bridge, of 20 tons load capacity, consisting of 38 floating segments in the total length of 345 metres, was handed over to the Tourist-Cultural Organisation of the Municipality of Zemun to be used until the end of summer season.
The preparation and setting up of the bridge location was an excellent opportunity for additional practicing of practical activities and procedures used by pontoneers while installing, maintaining and controlling the pontoon bridge.
After two-month “engagement” the bridge will be disassembled and transported by river to Šabac garrison where it will undergo regular maintenance in order to be ready to make the following summer more enjoyable and beautiful for the citizens of the capital.
