Minister Stefanović: Serbia must never forget its strong friendship with Russia
On the first day of his visit to the Russian Federation, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence Nebojša Stefanović, PhD, attended the commemoration of the Day of Remembrance and Sorrow, on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of Nazi Germany's attack on the Soviet Union in the Second World War. Serbia must never forget its strong friendship with Russia, Stefanović said, nor must we forget our heroes who fought in the Second World War and gave their lives so that we can live freely today.
Minister Stefanović attended the ceremony in the "Patriot" park near Moscow, after which he laid flowers at the monument to the "Mothers of Winners". He also visited the "Memory Lane" museum complex and the Main Cathedral of the Russian Armed Forces.
– Today, on the very day when fascist Germany launched Operation "Barbarossa" with the aim of invading the Soviet Union in 1941, we had the opportunity to visit the memorial complex that speaks of all the days of the war for liberation of, not only the Soviet Union, and to visit the main Cathedral of the Armed Forces - Stefanović said.
As he explained, a part of the museum complex exhibition is dedicated to the liberation of Belgrade and the former Yugoslavia.
– A lump of Serbian soil from the Cemetery of the Liberators of Belgrade was built into the cathedral, which symbolizes our ties, but it also shows how precious the freedom we won is. Serbia must never forget its strong friendship with Russia, neither must we forget our heroes, all those people who gave their lives in the Second World War and who fought so that we can live freely today in a country that makes its own decisions, that is independent of external influence, and that wants to achieve what is best for its people through partnership - said Minister Stefanović.
Minister Stefanović is visiting the Russian Federation at the invitation of the Minister of Defence, General of the Army Sergei Shoigu. He will participate in the 9th Moscow Conference on International Security.
