76th anniversary of the Syrmian Front breakthrough marked



The delegation representing the Ministry of Defence and the Serbian Armed Forces laid a wreath today at the memorial in the "Syrmian Front” memorial park in Adaševci near Šid, as part of the state ceremony marking the 76th anniversary of the Syrmian Front breakthrough.

The state ceremony was led by State Secretary at the Ministry of Labour, Employment, Veteran and Social Affairs Miodrag Kapor, and wreaths were laid by representatives of the Provincial Government, the municipality of Šid, the diplomatic corps, elementary school "Syrmian Front", Union of War Veterans
of the National Liberation Wars of Serbia and other associations and citizens.
A battle was fought on the Syrmian Front for one hundred and seventy-five days, from October 21, 1944 to April 12, 1945. About two hundred and fifty thousand soldiers took part on both sides. Along with the Yugoslav Army units, the Red Army troops, the Bulgarian People's Army and Italian forces also took part.

About thirteen thousand and five hundred Yugoslav soldiers, mostly young men from Serbia and Montenegro, one thousand and one hundred members of the Red Army, six hundred and thirty members of the Bulgarian People's Army and one hundred and sixty-three Italians were killed in fierce and bloody battles, in the wind and snow. The Syrmian Front breakthrough also marked the end of the Second World War on the territory of Serbia.

The ceremony was organized by the Board for nurturing the traditions of the Serbian liberation wars.
