President and Supreme Commander Vučić lays a wreath at the Monument to Unknown Hero on Mount Avala
The President of the Republic and the Supreme Commander of the Serbian Armed Forces Aleksandar Vučić, accompanied by the Minister of Defence Aleksandar Vulin and the Chief of the General Staff of the Serbian Armed Forces, General Milan Mojsilović, laid a wreath today at the Monument to the Unknown Hero on Mount Avala on the occasion of the Belgrade Liberation Day.
After the wreath-laying ceremony, with Honour Guard lined up and the national anthem playing, President Vučić wrote the following in the memorial book:
"Immortal liberators, the passing of decades does not diminish the magnitude of your accomplishment. Thanks to your courage and great sacrifice, Belgrade lives as a free city now in our independent Serbia. It is a city in which people see their future and the future of their children. Belgrade and Serbia today show that your sacrifice was not in vain. Heroes, eternal glory and praise to you for the freedom“.
After several days of bitter fighting, members of the People’s Liberation Army of Yugoslavia, aided by the Soviet allies, liberated Belgrade on 20 October 1944.
The Belgrade Operation or the Belgrade Offensive is one of the greatest and the most important battles in the Balkans in the Second World War, and it lasted from 12 to 20 October 1944.
