Laying of wreaths on the occasion of Victory Day over fascism
On the occasion of 9th May - Victory Day over fascism in the Second World War, delegations of the Ministry of Defence and the Serbian Armed Forces laid wreaths at the Cemetery of the Belgrade Liberators in the Second World War, at the Monument to the Liberators of Belgrade and the Monument to Soviet Soldiers, and also at the Monument to the Soviet Veterans on the Avala mountain.
Apart from being a sign of remembrance of the date when the victory over fascism was won 75 years ago in the Second World War, today’s holiday is an opportunity to pay tribute to all the heroes who fought for freedom.
Belgrade suffered great human casualties and destruction while it was occupied in the Second World War. One thousand three hundred and ninety-five soldiers of the People's Liberation Army of Yugoslavia and 818 members of the Red Army, who gave their lives fighting together for the liberation of the Serbian capital, are buried in the Cemetery of the Belgrade Liberators in the Second World War.
On Victory Day, tribute was also paid to the heroes of the Soviet Russia who tragically died in 1964, coming to mark the twentieth anniversary of the liberation of Belgrade. Monument to the Soviet Veterans was erected in their honour on the Avala mountain.
