105th anniversary of the Kolubara battle marked

A state ceremony at the Monument to the Serbian Warrior in downtown Lazarevac marked the 105th anniversary of the Battle of Kolubara today. The organizer of the ceremony was the Committee of the Government of the Republic of Serbia for fostering the traditions of Serbian liberation wars in cooperation with the Municipality of Lazarevac.

By laying of wreaths at the Monument to the Serbian Warrior and church service at the Memorial Temple of St. Dimitri with the ossuary, whose crypt is the resting place of more than 40.000 Serbian and Austro-Hungarian soldiers, members of the Ministry of Defense and the Serbian Armed Forces, Ministry of Labor, Employment, Veterans and Social Affairs, representatives of Lazarevac Municipality, members of associations that cherish and uphold the traditions of liberation wars and numerous citizens, paid tribute to the Serbian warriors who took part in the Battle of Kolubara.

The Battle of Kolubara is a textbook example of the skillful strategic action of a smaller and less equipped armed force, which from the defensive managed to divert the course of the battle into rapid and sudden offensive action.

The tactic, applied by General Živojin Mišić, distinguished by the rank of Voivoda (Fieldmarshal) after his victory at Kolubara, is a unique example of a military-strategic turnaround that brought about one of the most significant victories in the First World War to a nearly defeated army.
