Round Table on Countering the New Challenges
A round table titled “Problems in countering the new challenges and threats” was organised in the Central Military Club. It was attended by the State Secretary in the Ministry of Defence Aleksandar Živković, Dean of the University of Defence Major General Goran Radovanović PhD, representatives of the Private Office of the President of the Republic, National Assembly of Serbia, Council for cooperation with the Russian Federation and PR China, diplomatic corps, Ministry of Defence and General Staff of the Serbian Armed Forces, scientific establishments of Serbia and attenders of the 62nd class of General Staff Course.
Apart from the eminent experts in the field of defence and security of Serbia, the gathering, which continues the cooperation between the University of Defence and Collective Security Treaty Organisation (CSTO), includes the participation of the experts in political and security science from Russia.Opening the Round table and greeting the guests and participants on behalf of the Minister of Defence Aleksandar Vulin, State Secretary Aleksandar Živković highlighted that international system unstoppably slid into multipolarity and that modern challenges, risks and threats like migrations, terrorism, secession, violent extremism, proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, cyber terrorism and crime, corruption, coloured revolutions…produced a non-linear, asymmetric effect on the states and created problems in the field of security and defence which could not be responded in the traditional way.
- The Republic of Serbia, as military neutral country is permanently oriented towards improving its relations with its neighbours and regional countries and it continuously builds its position of a stable and reliable partner in strengthening the security and stability in Europe and the world. It is precisely why the cooperation with CSTO is one of the significant segments of the policy of national security of Serbia. Organising the round table with the representatives of the CSTO represents a unique opportunity to exchange opinions, views and experience on very important issues regarding countering the new challenges and threats. Only if we achieve a high level of joint cooperation and understanding in the field of security and defence of all key international subject, we will be able to efficiently and effectively confront the new forms of threats to national security – State Secretary Živković pointed out.At this year’s gathering, the second since the establishment of cooperation between the University of Defence and CSTO, two panels were held at which the participants analysed non-military “humanitarian” aspects of strengthening national and Eurasian security in countering the threats of hybrid and asymmetric character, and contemporary aspects of information warfare, use of weapons of mass destruction and potential problems in implementing an integrated response to accidents in the countries of CSTO and Serbia.
