Niš Military Hospital under reconstruction after 50 years

Defence Minister Aleksandar Vulin, accompanied by Bojan Jocić, State Secretary at the Ministry of Defence, and Colonel Uglješa Jovičić, MD–PhD, Head of the Military Health Department, has opened today an operating room in the building of the Surgical Department of the Niš Military Hospital.

The operating room is equipped with a video laparoscope with accompanying sets for minimally invasive abdominal surgery.

As Minister Vulin pointed out, it has been for the first time after 50 years that a major reconstruction of the Niš Military Hospital was initiated.

- This is the end of the first phase, we opened two new surgical rooms, we replenished the most indispensable equipment which is at the world's level, and we can say that the citizens of Niš and the entire region receive healthcare at the world's highest level. There are exceptional doctors working here, exceptional medical technicians, great people who are top professionals in their work, but now they have the best equipment and new operating rooms available so that every patient can get the best possible care here. Not in Belgrade, not in Novi Sad or any other town, but in their own city, the Minister of Defence said. He added that South of Serbia is indeed of the greatest possible importance for the Serbian Armed Forces, and the greatest part of our army is exactly here.

- That is why our military insured persons must have the best care. It is important to note that military health annually examines more than 500,000 people and most of them are civilians. Military medical services do more than three million different specialist examinations, and the majority of beneficiaries are civilians. Every investment in military health is an investment in the quality of life of every citizen of this country. Just as investing in the stronger Serbian Armed Forces, in arming, training and equipment, is investing in stability, security, and political peace and economic stability in this country, Minister Vulin emphasized and expressed satisfaction with the progress in equipping and renovation of the Niš Military Hospital.

- The Serbian Armed Forces is doing all this with its own forces. Every reconstruction here is carried out by our experts, builders, our expertise, our knowledge and resources, Minister of Defence said and thanked the Army Command, located in Niš, which also contributed to all this.

According to the Minister of Defence, this year, as almost never before, we have full pharmacies and more than enough medicines, when we talk about military insured persons.

- This year we have a refund, that is, the purchase of drugs outside our pharmacies and hospitals in the amount of five to 10 percent. We have all medicines, we take care of the military insured persons, but also about every citizen. I would also like to emphasize that everything will be reconstructed at the Niš Military Hospital in the forthcoming period, including the new block, and the central gas distribution, new equipment worth almost one million Euros will be procured. I hope that then we will be able to count on the space for magnetic resonance imaging equipment which is missing both in the City of Niš and in this hospital. The idea is that this hospital should be equipped with everything needed for patients not to be forced go to other hospitals and towns, Minister Vulin concluded.

Colonel Nebojša Đenić MD–PhD, Head of the Department for Surgical Diseases, general surgeon-traumatologist, emphasized the importance of the newly opened operating room.

- Minimally invasive surgery gives many advantages, since after these procedures patients recover much faster and return to their regular duties in a short time, especially when talking about members of the Serbian Armed Forces, Colonel Đenić said.

Rade Rajković, Chairman of the Assembly of the City of Niš, thanked the Ministry of Defence and Minister Vulin, and expressed his satisfaction that the Military Hospital Nš is gradually growing into a general, strong hospital in the south of Serbia.

Military Hospital Niš is a pillar of health care, both for the members of the Serbian Armed Forces and the citizens of the south of Serbia. According to the special contract with the National Health Insurance Fund - Branch Office for Nišava District since 2013, members of the Niš Military Hospital provide healthcare to the Fund's beneficiaries.  With its personnel and technological capacities it provides reliable professional health care for nearly two million people who have confidence in the Nš Military Hospital
