Strong military is a guarantor of secure future for the people

Defence Minister Aleksandar Vulin opened the exhibition "Items from the Treasury of the Military Museum", which was set up to celebrate the 139th anniversary of the founding of this unique military institution on 22nd August 1878.

On that occasion, Minister Vulin said that the Serbs do have so many things to show, things to be proud of, whom to rely on, whom they wish to look like, and that the history of the Serbian army is collected in the Military Museum where it can be seen how the past is great and how important it is:

- The people who forget their past, as the Serbs used to do, if they do not stop doing it, could endanger their future. The Serbian Armed Forces and the Serbian people will not jeopardize their future. There is no nation that has a secure future, without a strong, well organised and satisfied army, Vulin stressed.

The Defence Minister said that the years since the founding of our Military Museum are not only the years that we remember, but the years that we institutionally remember, 139 years during which we tried to preserve our past in an organized way, but he stressed that the time which is more behind us are the years in which we could not show the building, but we could say that it is a past that we are proud of.

- The tradition for which we exist, the tradition that determines what we will be in the future, is found in the funds of this museum, but the military for which and from which this museum exists is not only the past. The Serbs would not exist if there was not their past, but they would not have a future if there was not their military, underlined the Minister of Defence and reiterated that the nation that is unable to defend its freedom, the memory of itself, valuesbecause of which it exists, is not a nation that has a future.

He said that the Serbian people has things to defend, has a tradition and the system of values because of which it exists, and its army that deserves memory, but even more than that, which deserves the future, Minister Vulin concluded.

Presenting the exhibition "Items from the Treasury of the Military Museum" Head of the Military Museum, Lieutenant Colonel Gradimir Matić pointed out that, since its inception back in 1878, this institution pays great attention to collecting testimonies about the tradition of fighting for freedom, artefacts that show the creativity applied in the development of arms and equipment and the warfare in general. The rich fund of the Military Museum consists of more than 32,000 items organised in 14 collections and about 100,000 negatives and photographs, which go beyond the boundaries of national and strictly military history.

On the occasion of 139 years since the establishment of the Military Museum, the Šabac National Museum, the Museum of Yugoslav History and the Museum of the City of Novi Sad received Letters of Appreciation for the successful long-term cooperation in the implementation of joint museum projects.

The exhibition "Items from the Treasury of the Military Museum" will be displayed at the Military Museum Gallery until 26th September.
