Representatives of the Ministry of Defence at the Panel Discussion on Gender Equality in Novi Sad



Director of the Strategic Research Institute of the Ministry of Defence, Mrs Jovanka Šaranović, PhD, and Director of the Directorate for European Integration and Project Management in the Ministry of Defence, Colonel Katarina Štrbac, have participated in the panel discussion on "Gender Equality in the Republic of Serbia and prevention of discrimination against women", held in the Great Hall of Novi Sad City Assembly today.
 
Data show that women, from year to year, are faced with numerous forms of discrimination, usually on the labour market and at the employment, so it is of great importance to continuously address these issues, as it was said in the introductory part of the panel discussion.
 
Presenting the results in the field of gender equality achieved in the Ministry of Defence to numerous participants in the panel discussion, Jovanka Šaranović, PhD, pointed out possibility of education of women at the Secondary Vocational Military School, Military High School and Military Academy, as well as good media representation and campaigning for the admission of women to work in the defence system.
 
-There are still major challenges before the women in our society as regards achieving certain level of gender equality. Social and organizational support for the career development of women is of great importance in that, Mrs Šaranović, PhD, said adding that in the Ministry of Defence is doing great job in this area, with the exceptional support that comes from the highest levels, primarily from the defence minister. Speaking about the results achieved in the Ministry of Defence and the Serbian Armed Forces, Mrs Šaranović pointed out that visibility of women's representation in all categories has been established and that all forms of education in the defence system are open to them. 
 
Cololnel Katarina Štrbac stressed that women in the Ministry of Defence and the Serbian Armed Forces today enjoy all the rights as their male counterparts, and that the position of women in these structures will improve each year to the extent to which the women are ready to put on the uniforms.
 
-The Ministry of Defence and the Serbian Armed Forces intensively cooperate with local governments throughout Serbia and are available to all those who think that we can help them in any way. In this regard, our participation in this panel discussion is one of the bright examples of that cooperation. I am sure that we have the knowledge that can help our women in Serbia to strengthen their position, Colonel Štrbac announced, among other things, from the speaker stand at the panel discussion.
 
The panel discussion which was opened by the President of Novi Sad City Assembly, Zdravko Jelusić, was attended by Brankica Janković, Commissioner for Protection of Equality and Draginja Vlk, MSc.
