Minister Gasic visits Slovenia

Defence Minister Bratislav Gasic met today with Minister of Defence of Slovenia Andreja Katic with whom he discussed the possibilities for improving cooperation in the field of defence and the current political and security situation in the region and the world.

After signing the Agreement on military-technical cooperation between the two ministries of defence, the defence ministers of Serbia and Slovenia have expressed their satisfaction with
the creation of a legal basis for the improvement of military economic cooperation, which should be based on the joining of capacities of defence industries, to mutual benefit.

Both sides agreed that cooperation in the field of defence follows the overall bilateral relations. Bilateral Military Cooperation Plan for 2016 reflects the common interest and
represents a qualitative and quantitative step forward compared to the previous period. They expressed their expectation that future defence cooperation will be conducted through the exchange of experiences from deployments in multinational operations, and implementation of joint exercises and deepening cooperation between special units, in order to improve interoperability and raise the level of operational and functional capabilities of the two armies.

The interlocutors agreed that today's meeting marked the continuity of frequent meetings at ministerial level between the two countries, which is essential in terms of the complex security situation in the world and the region. Minister Gasic, expressing satisfaction with the opportunity to be among the first defence ministers from the region to meet with the Minister of Defence of the Republic of Slovenia, called Minister Katic to an official visit to Serbia.

Minister Gasic stressed that Serbia appreciates Slovenia's support in the process of European integration of Serbia, especially in the process of opening the first negotiation chapters without additional conditioning. He conveyed his gratitude to the members of the Slovenian KFOR contingent for the professional commitment and contribution to security in Kosovo and Metohija.

"One of the priorities of Serbia’s OSCE Chairmanship is also the adoption of a decision on migrations, because we believe that networking efforts of all international actors is crucial for coping with this complex issue," Minister Gasic said and announced a ministerial OSCE meeting in Belgrade, which will be attended by more than 40 chiefs of diplomacy, during which they will discuss the fight against terrorism and the issue of migrants.

He pointed out that since the beginning of the year the state border of Serbia had been crossed by around 490,000 migrants, and that the fact that some participants in the terrorist attack in Paris had been registered on the
Balkan route had created additional causes for concern and raised the need to introduce stricter control measures. The Serbian Government will continue to keep track of the problem of migrants with special attention and try to solve it in the spirit of protecting the national interest, while also protecting fundamental human rights.

Ministers Gasic and Katic expressed their readiness to employ joint efforts and commitment in the future to cope with the numerous security challenges posed by the current times.

During his visit to the Republic of Slovenia, it has been planned for Minister Gasic to visit the NATO Centre of Excellence for Mountain Warfare, where he will also see the 132nd Mountain Regiment.

Defence Minister is paying an official visit to Slovenia until 2 December.
