Pavle Beljanski Collection again in Belgrade

The exhibition of the paintings and sculptures of the most important representatives of the Serbian Modernism from Pavle Beljanski‘s Memorial Collection from Novi Sad was opened tonight in a Gallery of the Military Club in Belgrade.

Sixty-eight works of art by thirty- two authors, from the rich treasury of the famous Serbian donor, diplomat, collector and patron, Pavle Beljanski, were presented to the audience. Among them are Nadezda Petrovic, Milan Milovanovic, Petar Lubarda, Sava Sumanovic, Milan Konjovic, Nedeljko Gvozdenovic, Marko Celebanovic, ??van Bijelic. In that way, the Pavle Beljanski Memorial Collection from Novi Sad celebrates 50 years of its existence and work.

The exhibition “Pavle Beljanski Collection: again in Belgrade“was opened by the Minister of Culture, Media and Information Society Predrag Markovic.

- Military Club lives again, and the Crystal Ballroom shines again. Be with this collection until November 26 here, and be prepared to be in its home in Novi Sad in the following years. The collection has never been closed to the public and it is always there for new young people – Minister Markovic said.

Minister added that the characteristic of the Serbian people is that they easily forget their own values, and that this is also an opportunity to remind the public of numerous documentaries about great Serbian modernists, produced by the Radio-Television of Vojvodina and Belgrade.

In the course of the exhibition, numerous accompanying programmes will be organised – screenings of films about the authors from the collection, workshops for children, as well as guided exhibition tours. Apart from the general information material, the exhibition is accompanied by the 30 minute-long audio tours, which the audience can listen to via mobile phones, as enabled by Telenor.

Large audience in the Military Club was greeted by the Secretary for Culture of the Province of Vojvodina Milorad Djuric, the Head of the Serbian Defence Ministry’s Public Relations Department Colonel Petar Boskovic, the Director of the Media Center “Odbrana” lieutenant-colonel Slavoljub Markovic and Dr Jasna Jovanov, a Head of Pavle Beljanski Memorial Collection.

- It is important to remember Pavle Beljanski as a person – he was educated enough to recognise the real values, rich enough to collect such works and patriotic enough to donate the collection to his people – Secretary Milorad Djuric emphasised.

In this way, Media Center “Odbrana” continues the cooperation with cultural institutions in Serbia. This year, guests in the Serbian Military Club were “Nadazda Petrovic” Gallery from Cacak, Foundation “Momo Kapor”, the National Museum from Zrenjanin and the Military Museum from Belgrade. The selected works from 1,500 art objects from the Military Club’s rich treasury are about to be exhibited in Pavle Beljanski Memorial Collection premises in Novi Sad from November 9 to December 11.

- “Prisoners” of culture, what can an officer say in the presence of the Culture Minister? Although not much is expected from soldiers in this view, I will remind you that there were officers, especially those before war, who had a lot to say. However, the Serbian Military Club speaks for itself. We are trying to reclaim its old glory and to refine it. For a period of time it was devastated, but thankful to the Defence Ministry, headed by Minister Sutanovac, it serves its real purpose again – Colonel Petar Boskovic stressed, reminding that the works of art have been exhibited in that building for two years, starting with the exhibition of Milan Cile Marinkovic’s paintings.

The special segment of the exhibition is devoted to the blind and visually impaired persons, to whom, thankful to the tactile display, the contact with the artistic works from the Beljanski exhibition was also enabled. Tactile diagrams are prepared for two paintings Jefta Peric’s “Still Life” and Jovan Bijelic’s “A Girl with a Book”. Additional two diagrams are in correlation with the copy of a sculptor Sreten Stojanovic’s sculpture “Natasa Boskovic”.

- Many ask how come that the Pavle Beljanski collection is in Belgrade, when it had never before left the Memorial Collection in Novi Sad. By leaving the home premises, we wanted to mark our anniversary in an appropriate manner, and to feel how the works from the collection “function” in a changed context. We also wanted to encourage the audience and our colleagues as well, to think about those works in a different way, so that a new reading of the collection could commence – Jasna Jovanov told the audience.

Pavle Beljanski Memorial-Collection from Novi Sad was presented to the Belgrade audience for the first time in the period 1952-1957 in the Belgrade City Museum. Beljanski initially planned to donate it to that institution, but he nevertheless decided to place 185 paintings, sculptures, drawings and tapestries by 37 authors from the former-Yugoslav territory in Novi Sad. So as to inspire young art historians, in 1965, he established an award for the best graduation work at the Faculty of Philosophy in Belgrade with a topic in the national art history field. This year’s Pavle Beljanski Memory Collection 44th Award Ceremony will, due to the anniversary, take place in Belgrade in November.

The exhibition in the Military Club in Belgrade is sponsored by the Serbian Ministry of Culture, Media and Information Society, Government of the Province of Vojvodina and the Provincial Secretariat for Culture and Public Information.

In the Serbian Military Club’s Small Gallery, Pavle Beljanski Memorial Room has been exhibited. It provides the audience the opportunity to learn the details from the personal and public life of that renowned lawyer, collector and a highly reputable diplomat.

The audience can see the exhibition in the Serbian Military Club’s Big Gallery in Belgrade in Brace Jugovica Street 19, until November 26. The entrance is free.
