80th anniversary of Syrmian Front breakthrough

A state ceremony marking the 80th anniversary of the Syrmian Front breakthrough was held today at the Syrmian Front Memorial Park in Adaševci near Šid.
Prime Minister Miloš Vučević led the state ceremony on behalf of the President of the Republic and Supreme Commander of the Serbian Armed Forces, Aleksandar Vučić.

The ceremony marking the Syrmian Front breakthrough was attended by an MoD and SAF delegation headed by acting Assistant Minister for Budget and Finance Goran Momčilović and the Head of the Telecommunications and IT Department, General Staff, Brigadier General Mile Vitezović.

Addressing the gathering, Prime Minister Vučević said that the contribution of our ancestors must not be forgotten or diminished.
- In 1945, after unthinkable suffering, destruction and sacrifice, we victoriously ended our struggle against the occupiers. It was here on the Syrmian Front that the longest, hardest and bloodiest final battle for the liberation of our homeland was fought. From the end of October 1944 to April 12, 1945, the enemy put up the fiercest resistance in the Srem plain, aware of the strategic importance of this area. Due to the fierce fighting, the Syrmian Front remained deeply engraved on the collective memory as one of the most difficult periods in the final phase of the Second World War – emphasised Vučević, stressing that it is our obligation and duty to remember the people who laid down their lives to ensure that today’s generations can live in freedom.

The president of the Union of War Veterans of the National Liberation Wars of Serbia (SUBNOR), General Ljubiša Diković (retd), said that “the heroes of the Syrmian Front would not stop before the enemy because they had a higher goal ahead of them - victory and liberation”. He recalled that after 172 days the resistance had been crushed and the Syrmian Front breakthrough occurred.

As part of the state ceremony, organized by the Serbian Government’s Committee for Nurturing the Traditions of the Liberation Wars of Serbia, representatives of the Provincial Government, the Municipality of Šid, the City of Novi Sad, the Srem Administrative District, as well as representatives of SUBNOR and "Sremski Front" Elementary School laid wreaths, while representatives of the diplomatic corps laid white roses.
A battle was fought on the Syrmian from October 21, 1944 to April 12, 1945. About 250,000 soldiers took part on both sides. Along with the Yugoslav Army units, the Red Army troops, the Bulgarian People's Army and Italian forces also took part. About 13,500 Yugoslav soldiers were killed in fierce battles. The Syrmian Front breakthrough marked the end of the Second World War on the territory of Serbia.
