Minister Gašić: Tirana Memorandum provocative, contrary to international law

Minister of Defence Bratislav Gašić has stated that the signing of the trilateral memorandum of cooperation on defence between Croatia, Albania and the so-called “Kosovo” without consulting the official Belgrade is a confirmation of the soundness of our decision to make strategic investments in strengthening and modernizing the Serbian Armed Forces.

- It is a provocative initiative by our neighbouring countries that is contrary to the efforts to strengthen regional security. It is contrary to international law because it is a direct violation of UNSC Resolution 1244. We also think that the timing of the decision to sign that document is not accidental, and that the intention behind it can by no means be considered friendly towards the Republic of Serbia - stated Minister Gašić.

According to him, these developments are not surprising to Serbia because Zagreb and Tirana have long been striving to introduce provisional Priština institutions to NATO by the back door, while simultaneously helping the illegal process of developing the so-called “Kosovo army”.

- Clearly, such a scenario is unacceptable for our country. Kosovo and Metohija is an autonomous province within the Republic of Serbia, despite the fact that some countries, including Albania and Croatia, have recognized its illegal and self-proclaimed independence - emphasized Gašić.

The minister highlights that Serbia will continue to actively cooperate with neighbouring countries and NATO in the interest of regional peace and stability.

- We will continue to develop our defence capabilities decisively and systematically, primarily as a deterrent. In addition, we remain fully committed to neutrality and peaceful international policy. We believe that complete and long-term stabilization of the situation in the Balkans can be achieved solely by strengthening mutual trust and respecting the legitimate interests of all countries in the region - said Minister Bratislav Gašić.
