Minister Gašić leads the state wreath-laying ceremony at the Liberators of Belgrade Cemetery
The envoy of the President of the Republic and Commander-in-Chief of the Serbian Armed Forces Aleksandar Vučić, Minister of Defence Bratislav Gašić, has led today the state ceremony of laying wreaths and paying tribute at the Cemetery of the Liberators of Belgrade in World War II, on the occasion of commemorating the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Belgrade.
Minister Gašić, accompanied by the Chief of the General Staff of the Serbian Armed Forces, General Milan Mojsilović and the Chief of the Defence Minister’s Private Office, Brigadier General Goran Momčilović, laid a wreath at the Monument to the Liberators of Belgrade and wrote in the memorial book:
“Today, I am paying tribute to the fallen liberators and their commanders who liberated our city, our Belgrade, by fighting together.
Without your sacrifice, we would not have our freedom today.
Long live the Serbian Armed Forces! Long live Serbia!”
Wreaths were also laid by ministers in the Serbian Government, delegations from the embassies of the Russian Federation, Belarus, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Armenia, with playing of national anthems, as well as the delegation from the City of Belgrade and delegations of associations.
The Minister of Defence laid a wreath at the Monument to a Red Army soldier and paid tribute by laying roses at the Eternal Flame Monument, within the complex of the Cemetery of the Liberators of Belgrade in the World War II.
After several days of heavy fighting, the members of the People's Liberation Army of Yugoslavia, supported by the forces of the Red Army, liberated the capital of Yugoslavia on 20th October 1944, thus ending the long German occupation of the city, during which a large number of citizens died, and Belgrade suffered great destruction.
