Minister Gašić Attends Unveiling of Monument to Heroine Milunka Savić
Today, Minister of Defence Bratislav Gašić attended unveiling and sanctification of monument to heroine Milunka Savić, in Belgrade Municipality Voždovac, together with Prime Minister Miloš Vučević and Minister of Culture Nikola Selaković.
After the sanctification of the monument, Prime Minister Vučević laid a wreath accompanied by ministers Gašić and Selaković.
Addressing the present Prime Minister Vučević stated that the First World War had been a time of Doomsday, Golgotha for the Serbs, as well as a time of their Resurrection.
- In the whirlwind of cruel fighting, fearless Serb women boldly stepped onto the battlefield alongside men. Their courage, self-sacrifice and selflessness left a deep mark in military history. While their husbands, brothers and fathers were in trenches, our women took over the burden of taking care of families and entire society. They became the pillar of family, village and nation. Their strength and resolve were visible in all spheres of life - in improvised hospitals, and battlefield too. They tirelessly cared for the wounded and ill giving them comfort and hope for their healing - Prime Minister Vučević underlined.
He reminded of numerous Serb women who had written new pages of history, one of them being Milunka Savić.
- Grateful Serbian people remembers today this fearless warrior. -By erecting this monument, the capital city of Belgrade is repaying a small part of the debt to the sacrifice and heroism of Milunka Savic - the prime minister said stressing that her war feats would serve as an example of courage, self-sacrifice and love of freedom and one's own people to future generations.
The monument was sanctified by the Bishop of Hvostan Aleksej and the priesthood of the Serbian Orthodox Church. The ceremony was attended by members of the Ministry of Defence and Serbian Armed Forces, representatives of the City of Belgrade, local self-government, representatives of veteran associations, and descendants of Milunka Savić.
The monument is the work of two sculptors, Zoran Ivanović and Jelena Atanasković, who thus, permanently saved Milunka Savić from oblivion.
Serbian heroine Milunka Savić fought as a volunteer in the Balkan Wars and the First World War and was wounded four times fighting for the freedom of the fatherland. She became the most decorated woman of the Great War. Milunka Savić received seven decorations, some of them being military golden Karađorđe’s star with swords, Gold medal for courage “Miloš Obilić” and the Order of the Legion of Honour.
