Members of Ministry of Defence and Serbian Armed Forces take part in Ascension Day Procession

Members of the Ministry of Defence and the Serbian Armed Forces took part in the Ascension Day (Spasovdan) Procession tonight. The procession is a traditional way to celebrate the feast day of the city of Belgrade, the Ascension of the Lord (Spasovdan).
Members of the Serbian Armed Forces Guard, Military Academy cadets and military priests walked the streets of central Belgrade alongside the most sacred objects – the holy relics of the Venerable Justin of Ćelije and the miracle-working Icon of the Most Holy Theotokos “of the Sign”, in a solemn procession led by His Holiness Porfirije, Serbian Patriarch.

The Ascension Day Procession started with people gathering in front of the Church of Ascension, made its way down Kneza Miloša and Kralja Milana streets, across Slavija Square, where Patriarch Porfirije read a passage from the Holy Gospel, and later delivered a sermon to the people gathered at the Church of Saint Sava.
The Ascension Day (Spasovdan) was established as the capital’s feast day celebrating renewal and progress after the Serbian ruler Despot Stefan Lazarević had declared Belgrade the capital of Serbia in 1403.
