Training course in explosive ordnance detection

A six-month training course preparing military working dogs and their handlers to detect explosive ordnance is underway at the Dog Training Centre in Knjaz Mihailo Barracks in Niš.
The trainees are professional service members from several units of the Serbian Armed Forces who are being trained as military working dog handlers responsible for detecting explosive ordnance, while the newly introduced dog breeds - German and Belgian Shepherds – are undergoing relevant training. Once they complete their training, they will be assigned to SAF units together with their handlers.

The dog handlers’ training consists of a theoretical and a practical part, with an emphasis on teaching them how to enhance the natural qualities of dogs and sharpen their most developed sense – that of smell.

The program includes the socialization of dogs and their adaptation to different working conditions. Therefore, the training is being conducted both at the training grounds of the Dog Training Centre and in the area outside the barracks where there are more people, vehicles and other external influences.
This is one of the most complex and demanding forms of training carried out at the Centre and the successful training provided to military working dogs and their handlers helps improve the ability of the Serbian Armed Forces to provide protection to individuals, facilities and mobile assets owned by the Serbian Armed Forces.
