Today, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence Miloš Vučević, together with Minister of Health Danica Grujičić, Minister of Science, Technological Development and Innovation Jelena Begović and the President of the Provisional Authority of the City of Belgrade, Aleksandar Šapić, laid the foundation stone of a new diagnostic and research facility with a biosafety level 3 (BSL-3) laboratory at the Institute of Virology, Vaccines and Sera "Torlak".
Speaking about the importance of the project, Minister Grujičić said that it was a historical event organized by the Ministry of Health in an effort to restore the Institute of Virology, Vaccines and Sera "Torlak" to its former glory and importance.
- Today's event marks the historical continuity of our most important national institute for infectious diseases. By laying the foundation stone today, we are strengthening the foundations of our country’s independence in combating infectious diseases known to us and those that we might face in the future. New diseases and epidemics require new weapons to fight them, the history of medicine is exactly that, the response to new challenges and unknown enemies that we face in the form of viruses and microorganisms - said Minister of Health Grujičić.
She gave special thanks to Minister Vučević and the Ministry of Defence, and to other institutions that had facilitated the implementation of this important project.
The modern facility that will be constructed as part of the Institute for Virology, Vaccines and Sera "Torlak", will contain a set of interconnected laboratories where research and diagnostic procedures will be conducted using state-of-the-art equipment. The new laboratory will be accessible to other Serbian diagnostic and research institutions, which will help improve the system for the control and prevention of infectious diseases through the introduction of new diagnostic procedures.
Today’s laying of the foundation stone was attended by the Serbian Government ministers, representatives of the Ministry of Defence, Serbian institutions, World Bank, World Health Organization and Torlak employees.
