International Holocaust Remembrance Day commemorated
A state ceremony to remember the victims of Holocaust was held today at the Monument to the Victims of the Second World War Genocide, on the site of the former “Staro sajmište” concentration camp in Belgrade.
On behalf of the Ministry of Defence and the Serbian Armed Forces the ceremony was attended by State Secretary at the Ministry of Defence Nemanja Starović, acting Assistant Minister for Defence Policy Predrag Bandić and Air Force and Air Defence Commander Lieutenant General Duško Žarković. 
The event was also attended by representatives of the Government and the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia, representatives of the City of Belgrade, “Staro sajmište” Memorial Centre, Union of War Veterans of the National Liberation Wars of Serbia (SUBNOR), numerous associations, war veterans, concentration camp survivors and the descendants of the killed prisoners. 
The Second World War claimed the lives of several million innocent victims, and the International Holocaust Remembrance Day has been commemorated since 2005, following a resolution by the General Assembly of the United Nations. The day when the most notorious concentration camp, Auschwitz-Birkenau, was liberated on January 27, 1945, was designated by the General Assembly of the United Nations as the day of human rights, the prevention and punishment of the crime of genocide, as well as the always present threat of racial, national and religious hatred based on prejudice.
