Minister Vučević Attends Commemoration of 82nd Anniversary of Pogrom in “Novi Sad Raid”
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence of Miloš Vučević attended today the commemoration of 82nd anniversary of the “Novi Sad Raid” in the Second World War.
On that occasion, Minister Vučević placed a wreath in the water of the Danube, from a river utility ship 335 “Apatin”, accompanied by Brigadier General Goran Momčilović and Brigadier General Zoran Nasković.Wreaths were also placed from the ship of the River Flotilla of the Serbian Armed Forces by Mayor of Novi Sad Milan Đurić, representatives of the Jewish Municipality of Novi Sad and Matica Romska in the presence of military priest Lieutenant Selimir Vagić.
The commemoration dedicated to the victims of the pogrom was organised at the “Family” memorial by the Town of Novi Sad, Jewish Municipality and Eparchy of Bačka. His Holiness the Bishop of Bačka Irinej led the religious service, while Supreme Rabbi Isak Asiel led the commemorative service of the Jewish community, giving the oration and paying homage.The commemoration of the pogrom held at the Quay of the Victims of the Raid in Novi Sad was attended by representatives of the Ministry of Defence and Serbian Armed Forces, Assembly of Vojvodina, Embassy of Israel, Embassy of Hungary, and towns and municipalities of Serbia, Jewish Municipality of Novi Sad, Matica Romska and descendants of the victims of the “Novi Sad Raid”.
This year’s title of the commemoration of 82nd anniversary of the pogrom in the “Novi Sad Raid” was the “Icy silence”. Its aim is to preserve the memory of the suffering of the citizens of Novi Sad in the Second World War when Hungarian occupying forces killed in the raid between 1,300 and 1,700 Serbs, Jews and Roma, including a large number of women, children and the elderly.
