24th anniversary of NATO bombing of civilians on Varvarin Bridge
Secretary of the Ministry of Defence Nebojša Nikolić, accompanied by Rector of the Defence University, Brigadier General Prof. Boban Đorović, laid a wreath today at the memorial to the victims of NATO aggression, thus marking the anniversary of NATO bombing of civilians on the Varvarin Bridge.
As part of the ceremony, wreaths were also laid by representatives of the Ministry of Labour, Employment, Veteran and Social Affairs, Ministry of the Interior, Rasina Administrative District, president of the municipality of Varvarin, representatives of local self-governments, the victims’ families, associations and citizens.The highest-performing student of the Varvarin High School traditionally lowered a wreath into the Great Morava River from the Varvarin Bridge.
The commemoration on the bridge over the Great Morava River was preceded by the holy liturgy and requiem mass for the victims held in the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Varvarin.
The Remembrance Day ceremony is held every year in memory of May 30, 1999, when 10 civilians were killed and 17 were seriously wounded on the bridge over the Velika Morava.
