Minister Vučević meets with Secretary General of EEAS Sannino

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence Miloš Vučević met with Secretary General of the European External Action Service (EEAS) Stefano Sannino at the “Schuman Forum” in Brussels today.
On that occasion, Minister Vučević pointed out that the partnership between Serbia and the EU in the field of security and defence has been lasting for more than a decade, and that it is in keeping with national foreign policy priorities, which is the Serbian membership of the European Union.

According to the minister of defence “Serbia is, in cooperation with other states and international organisations, oriented towards contributing to the strengthening of its own, regional and global security, which is shown by its participation in EU crisis management military missions and operations, Battle group concept, cooperation with the European Defence Agency, and the participation in their projects, and provision of assistance to other authorities in building capacities for the participation in civilian EU missions.

Minister Vučević underlined that the military neutrality is the strategic orientation of Serbia, which does not represent an obstacle to cooperation and achievement of good results with all interested parties. He stressed that the stability of the region can solely be achieved through dialogue and cooperation, which is why the Ministry of Defence of the Republic of Serbia incessantly works on the enhancement and further development of relations with all states and international organisations.
Minister Vučević stressed that the presence of international forces in Kosovo and Metohija, which is in line with the UN SC Resolution 1244 and Military Technical Agreement, is necessary to maintain peace, and that the dialogue between Belgrade and Priština is the only way to overcome the disputes employing peaceful and political means. “One sided and irresponsible moves of Priština, not only harm the dialogue, but they have impact on the destabilisation of the entire region”, Minister Vučević underlined.

Speaking about the European path of Serbia, EEAS Secretary-General Sannino stated, “A visible progress of the Republic of Serbia was noticed over the last month in terms of the talks both regarding the dialogue and in the matter of the national position”. He stressed that it was obvious to him that the Republic of Serbia had more opportunities with the European Union than obstacles.
During today’s meeting, Sannino proposed expanding the security partner cooperation to include other areas such as cyber security and hybrid threats. According to him, that would expand and enhance security cooperation and enable us to have a complete approach to security, because it does not suffice to talk only about the participation in peacekeeping operations and missions. Today’s security, as Sannino pointed out, has to be founded on common perception of challenges and risks in the world.
