Dog handlers’ training for guard duty
Dog handlers and military working dogs have completed this year’s first cycle of training, conducted at "Knjaz Mihailo" barracks in Niš, to prepare for guarding Serbian military facilities and movable property.
The training, which is carried out several times a year, aims to prepare professional members of the Serbian Armed Forces for the duties of dog handlers, and to periodically retrain dogs trained for guard duty.
In accordance with the training program, handlers did various drills with working dogs on a custom built dog training course, aiming to build mutual trust and ensure handlers' absolute control of the dogs when carrying out assignments. The emphasis was on general dog training exercises, obstacle negotiation and exercises to improve dogs’ alertness and timely response to various threats.
Upon completion of the training, working dogs and their handlers were assigned to SAF units, where they will be entrusted with guarding military facilities and property.
The guard duty training is one of numerous types of training offered by the Dog Training Centre, which is responsible for the training, medical care, breeding and reproduction of working dogs, as well as the training for the veterinary service personnel.
