Minister Vučević attends promotion of books by Dejan Medaković
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence Miloš Vučević has attended a promotion of books by academician Dejan Medaković to mark the centenary of the birth of this prominent scientist, writer, art and cultural historian. The event was held at the Central Military Club in Belgrade today. On that occasion, Minister Vučević said that Dejan Medaković’s story was unstoppable, victorious, successful, and that it was testimony to much more than one historical era.
- Of course, there is a strong link between Dejan Medaković and the city I come from, Novi Sad and Sremski Karlovci, both family-wise and professionally. A good part of his career was related to Matica Srpska, to the Gallery of Matica Srpska, to his Sremski Karlovci, but Dejan Medaković was an all-Serbian intellectual, a beacon, someone who gave us signals or a roadmap to the future by revealing the truth about history - Minister Vučević said.
The Minister of Defence thanked the publishing company "Prometej" for its outstanding, meticulous work and for its efforts not to let the work of this great academician fall into oblivion, stressing the importance of his works for Serbia’s history of art and history and science. Speaking about the life and work of the celebrated academician, the Minister of Defence also referred to the situation in Kosovo and Metohija.
- I am sure that the writings, words and thoughts left behind by Dejan Medaković contain answers to some of the questions that still bother us today or the situations that we still encounter today, which are not characteristic only of the present time. First of all, to the regret of our misfortunate people in Kosovo and Metohija, they keep recurring throughout centuries. So let's not forget that history is a life’s teacher. Dejan Medaković offered a fantastic explanation as to what history is, saying that history explains the present and is a guide for the future - Minister Vučević said.
He emphasized that we had responsibility and obligation towards future generations.
- We are not ashamed of what happened, we learn from the mistakes we unfortunately made on some occasions, and we are not ashamed of people like Dejan Medaković, who are truly the pride of our entire nation. Let's not allow some current trends to cast a shadow over the work of Dejan Medaković, to convince us that it is not modern. Instead, let us find time to read at least a few sentences, a few paragraphs, a few pages or a whole book in order to understand that things existed before us, and above all, to understand the obligation we have towards those who will come after us - Minister Vučević said.
Dejan Medaković is one of the most significant Serbian authors in the last 100 years. A representative of the publishing company “Prometej”, Zoran Kolundžija, the chairman of the Board and Assembly of Vuk's Endowment, Boško Suvajdžić, PhD, academician Svetislav Božić, art historian Vladimir Simić, PhD, and president of the Executive Committee for the Celebration of 800th Anniversary of Hilandar, Zoran Bingulac, PhD, spoke about his works, career and life.
