Anniversary of death of Serbian soldiers and civilians killed in Slovak Republic commemorated



A Ministry of Defence and Serbian Armed Forces delegation, led by the Head of the Public Relations Department, Colonel Mihailo Zogović, PhD, has attended the ceremonies marking the anniversary of the death of civilians and soldiers killed in the Slovak Republic.
  Wreaths were laid today in Veliki Međer camp, where 5,135 Serbian soldiers and 312 Montenegrin soldiers died in the period from August 1914 to October 1918. Twenty-one thousand prisoners were held in Veliki Međer camp. It was the very first camp, established in August 1914 and closed in October 1918. Soldiers died in the camp due to poor living conditions and infectious diseases.

Wreaths were also laid by the representatives of the Ministry of Labour, Employment, Veteran and Social Affairs, and the representatives of Veliki Međer. Military Academy cadets, representatives and students of the Belgrade University of Criminal Investigation and Police Studies, veteran and associations for preserving the traditions of the Serbian liberation wars were also in attendance at the wreath-laying ceremony.

Yesterday, the MoD and SAF delegation laid wreaths at the military cemetery in Kopčany, the district of Petržalka, Slovakia, where 51 people from former Yugoslavia, who died between 1916 and 1918, are buried.
  The cemetery was built between 1916 and 1918 and soldiers of nine nationalities were buried there. In the vicinity of the cemetery, there was a military hospital and everyone who died there, regardless of whether they were Austro-Hungarian soldiers, or enemy soldiers, i.e. Russian, Serbian and Italian soldiers, were buried in that cemetery.

The commemoration of the anniversary of the death of civilians and soldiers who died in Slovakia was also attended by representatives of the Union of War Veterans of Serbia, the Association of descendants of Serbian War Veterans 1912-1920 and the Union of War Veterans of the National Liberation
Wars of Serbia.
