Commemoration for Serbian and Greek Soldiers Perished in First World War
Today, in Pirot, the traditional commemoration was held with all military honours in honour of Serbian and Greek soldiers who died in the First World War who were buried in this town.
The commemoration was attended by Chief of General Staff of Serbian Armed Forces General Milan Mojsilović, with a delegation, and on that occasion, he laid wreaths at the Greek military cemetery and at the Monument to citizens of Pirot fallen in the First World War. High delegations from Greece and Cyprus paid their homage to the perished soldiers, as well as representatives of the Ministry of Labour, Employment, Veteran and Social Affairs, bodies of local self-government and organisation which cherish the tradition of defence and liberation wars.
The religious service was performed by Bishop of Niš and military priest Arsenije, with the joints service of priests from the Eparchy of Niš and Chief military priest.
Pirot is the resting place of 7610 Serbian and 358 Greek soldiers and officers who fought together and perished in the First World War, and the joint Serbian-Greek commemoration ceremony is organised each September in their honour.
