This evening, an exhibition titled the “Remembrance of Yugoslav Artists of the Revolution” has been opened in the Gallery of the RTS. The exhibition is organised in cooperation with the Radio Television of Serbia and the Media Centre “Odbrana”. It is a selection of the works of art from the Artistic Collection of the Central Military Club bought out from exhibitions “NOB in the works of art of visual artists of Yugoslavia” in the period from 1961 to 1985.
Twenty-four exhibited paintings include the works of Petar Lubarda, Mića Popović, Nandor Glid, Branko Miljuš, Radislav Trkulja, Milić of Mačve, and other great visual artists of the second half of 20th century.
Opening the exhibition, art critic and member of the Council for Artistic Work of the RTS Đorđe Kadijević pointed out that the works of our artists inspired by the revolution from 1941 to 1945, change their context today, not representing solely propaganda material, but artistic masterpieces, no matter if this period qualifies as a positive or negative episode of history.
The author of the exhibition, Senior Curator and Head of the Gallery of the Central Military Club Jelena Knežević, reminded that the Gallery of the JNA Club was founded in 1953 with the idea of engaging in propaganda activities, within which the event “NOB in the works of art of visual artists of Yugoslavia” was created.
- The significance of this event is showed by the names of the participants of the first exhibition, mounted in 1961: Jovan Bijelić, Danica Antić, Đorđe Andrejević Kun, Olja Ivanjicki and many other artists who marked the Serbian painting of 20th century. Following the success of the first exhibition, its realization continued every five years until the last exhibition in 1985, which was titled “Victory and Freedom”, said Jelena Knežević.
Marking the 20th anniversary of the existence of the Yugoslav People’s Army, then Club of the JNA in Belgrade launched an initiative to organize a large art exhibition dedicated to the motives of the People’s Liberation Struggle and the Revolution.
After three and a half decades of successful existence, the sixth exhibition ended the cycle of these exhibitions, but this event gave birth to valuable works of art, which at present constitute artistic heritage, essential for the understanding of the development of Yugoslav art in the first decades after liberation.
The opening of the exhibition was attended by Head of the Public Relations Department of the Ministry of Defence Colonel Mihailo Zogović, Assistant of Director General of the RTS Aleksandra Jelisavac, and numerous guests from the cultural and public spheres of the country.
The exhibition is going to be open in the Gallery of the RTS until 31st August 2022.
