MoD and SAF members participate in “Belgrade Prays for Peace” Ascension Day procession
In accordance with tradition, members of the Ministry of Defence and the Serbian Armed Forces have taken part in today’s Ascension Day procession marking the capital’s Patron Saint Day (Slava) - the Feast of the Ascension of Jesus Christ (Spasovdan), held under the motto "Belgrade prays for Peace".
Members of the Serbian Armed Forces Guard, Military Academy cadets and military chaplains walked through the capital’s central streets in a prayer march, carrying religious relics - the icon of the Most Holy Mother of God “Trojeručica” and the relics of the Holy Serbian Despot Stefan Lazarević and Saint Petka in the traditional “Slava” procession led by His Holiness Porfirije, the Serbian Patriarch.
The Ascension Day procession began with participants gathering in front of the Church of the Ascension of the Lord, and continued along Kneza Miloša and Kralja Milana Streets, across Slavija Square and Oslobođenje Boulevard to the Saint Sava Church in Vračar, where Patriarch Porfirije held the Ascension Day sermon and together with the faithful, prayed for peace and well-being.
Afterwards, the MoD "Stanislav Binički" Ensemble’s Revue Orchestra and soloists gave a performance on the plateau in front of Saint Sava Church. The program included musical pieces dedicated to the capital and the orchestra was conducted by Katarina Božić. Accompanied by the orchestra, Mina Gligorić sang the “Serenade to Belgrade" and "My Dear Belgrade", and Dušan Svilar performed the famous melodies "Belgrade" and "April in Belgrade".
The Ascension Day has been established as the capital’s Patron Saint Day in 1403 when Despot Stefan Lazarević declared Belgrade the capital of Serbia and chose the Ascension Day as the capital’s Patron Saint Day.
