Minister Stefanović's remarks on reintroduction of compulsory military service delivered to “Telegraf“: We will have a devised plan within the next two weeks
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence Nebojša Stefanović, PhD, has made a statement to the “Telegraf.rs” portal today, saying that the Ministry of Defence and the Serbian Armed Forces have formed work groups to analyze all segments related to the assigned task and the planning of potential reintroduction of compulsory military service.
"I expect we will have a devised plan within the next two weeks, with detailed analyses and the best solutions in terms of the financial aspect, the training aspect and the aspects of recruitment and selection, which we will present to President Vučić," said Minister Stefanović.
He said that his personal position on this issue was well-known.
"As President Vučić has said, Serbia is a neutral country, and I believe that, as such, it should have compulsory military service, just like Austria and Switzerland. By introducing it, we would, above all, enhance the defence capabilities of our country," said Stefanović.
According to Minister Stefanović, it is important for young people to undergo military training and get acquainted with complex combat systems and other modern weapons and military equipment that the Serbian Armed Forces did not have over the past few decades, but they do now. According to him, after completing their military service, young people will be trained to come to the aid of their fellow citizens at any time, but they will also possess skills and knowledge that they will find useful both in their personal and professional lives.
"Of course, the final decision will be made by the parliament, but I am deeply convinced, both as the Minister of Defence and as a man who has performed his military service, that this is extremely useful for young people and our country," said Stefanović.
