Minister Stefanović: In our fierce struggle for justice, suffering did not pass us by
Today, on Good Friday, the saddest Christian holiday, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence Nebojša Stefanović PhD reminded that on that day we remembered all the Serbs, Jews and Roma who had been killed in mass inhuman killings during the Second World War. “The symbolism of the holiday is obvious, because in our fierce struggle for justice, suffering did not pass us by. The fascist and ustasha atrocities will remain written in black in the world history as the deadliest act against humanity and life.
On 22nd April 1945, a group of prisoners, exhausted by several months of maltreatment, gathered enough strength and courage to fight for freedom and breached the death camp in Jasenovac. Widely notorious for the most monstrous atrocities, torture and outrageous killings, Jasenovac surpassed Auschwitz in one thing – it was the only system of death camps on European soil that had death camps for children” – Minister Stefanović wrote on his Facebook account.
He stated that Serbian people is a freedom loving people, one of the peoples of the world who suffered the most and that it is exactly why Serbia sends the message of peace to the whole world in this difficult moment, and it advocates for peace and security.
“The history of Serbia is written in blood of this people, and the painful memories oblige us to steadfastly preserve our security and cherish the culture of remembrance, so that the crimes such as those in Jasenovac, Banjica and Old Fair Ground would never repeat. May the glory of the victims last forever!” – Minister Stefanović wrote.
