Minister Stefanović: We appreciate and remember every victim built into our country’s freedom
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence Nebojša Stefanović, PhD, said that today, on April 12, we remember the glorious and bloody battle - the Syrmian Front breakthrough, which marked the victory of the Yugoslav Army against powerful fascist forces and ended the Second World War in our country.
"The freedom-loving world, reflected in the courageous struggle of the Serbian people, did not agree to the Nazi and fascist ideology even in the hardest of times. About 250,000 soldiers took part in the battle, fighting in snow and mud for 175 days, to the last atom of their strength. Along with the Yugoslav Army units, the Red Army troops, the Bulgarian People's Army and Italian forces fought bravely. About 13,500 Yugoslav soldiers, 1,100 members of the Red Army, 630 members of the Bulgarian People's Army and 163 Italians serving in Yugoslav units were killed in heavy fighting" - Minister Stefanović wrote on his Facebook account.
Thanks to those heroes’ sacrifice, our country was liberated after years of Nazi occupation. "We appreciate and remember every sacrifice built into the freedom of our homeland. Seventy-seven years have passed, but we still remember. We will always foster the culture of remembrance, because only thus can we give full recognition to heroic deeds and prove that their sacrifice was not in vain. Eternal glory to the heroes!"- wrote Minister Stefanović.
