Military school students – shooting champions

In addition to top class education, Military Grammar School and Secondary Vocational Military School provide their students with numerous opportunities to make the most of their talents. Thanks to their choice of secondary school, Helena Miščević, Uroš Vukojević and Luka Milošević discovered their shooting talent, which has already brought them notable success in junior competitions, including the recently held Serbian Championship.
The academic achievement of these three young people is accompanied by outstanding sports performance for which calmness, deep concentration and great precision are crucial. However, they modestly say that the turning point, which led them to winners’ podiums, was the choice of secondary school.

According to them, the Military Grammar School and the Secondary Vocational Military School are the right choice for all their peers who know what their path is and do not fear challenge.

- Before I enrolled in the Secondary Vocational Military School, I had trained basketball and had strong support of my coach because I was good at the sport. I learned that military schools provide their students with the opportunity to develop professionally, but also in terms of sports. That got me interested in enrolling in this school, as well as the fact that I will have a secure job after graduation - says Uroš Vukojević, the fourth-year student of the 49th Class of the Secondary Vocational Military School.

Together with his schoolmates, Uroš won numerous medals in basketball, volleyball, football, table tennis, rowing, and then, in his third year at the Secondary Vocational Military School, he discovered shooting.  - At that time, the most modern air shooting range in our country was opened at the residence hall of the Military Grammar School and the Secondary Vocational Military School. I heard that there was a shooting section, went to several training sessions and discovered that I was talented for this sport - Uroš points out. The story of Helena Milošević, a 46th Class student attending the Military Grammar School, is similar.

- I started shooting in the third year of secondary school. When the air shooting range opened, we got excellent conditions for training, and we also have excellent coaches, some of whom are the members of the Serbian national team, multiple champions and Olympians - Helena explains.

This young, successful girl, who won a silver medal in the junior small calibre pistol event at the National Championship and a team gold medal at the junior and senior small calibre pistol events at the Serbian Championship, sees herself as a Military Academy cadet and later as a member of the Serbian Armed Forces.

- I’ve been attracted to the military profession since childhood, and I like the courageous attitude of our service members. That is why I wanted to enrol in the Military Grammar School. After four years spent in that school, I can say that every moment was precious, because military schools prepare their students for life. I think that we are much more serious compared to the students who attend civilian schools, and that the experience we gained by parting from our parents at the age of 14-15 and living in a boarding school, is invaluable. What is particularly valued in our Military Grammar School is friendship. We all stand together, we go through the same situations together, we understand each other well and we develop lifelong friendships. Of course, we are also preparing for enrolment in the Military Academy - Helena says with a smile.

Luka Milošević, a second-year student of the 51st Class of the Secondary Vocational Military School, who was officially declared the best young athlete in the Ministry of Defence and the Serbian Armed Forces in 2021, also hopes to achieve continued success in sports. In just over a year, Luka won 35 individual and seven team medals in shooting. He won a silver medal in the individual competition at the Serbian Junior Championship in Smederevo and together with his friends Vladimir Ćurčin and Uroš Vukojević, he won the team gold.

Although he used to train football and water polo, Luka says that it was all recreational compared to the shooting sport, which fascinated him from the minute he tried his hand at it in the Secondary Vocational School.
- This school offers a wide range of opportunities. You can try your hand at almost anything. I chose shooting, but there are also athletics, martial arts, orienteering, skiing, swimming, football, basketball, rowing, and chess. I have always loved the military profession and my grandfather, father and brother worked and still work in the armed forces. I wanted to follow in their footsteps. From that, an interest in weapons was born, which, in a way, led me to shooting - Luka explains.

Just as it is difficult for him to say which of his medals is the most precious to him, Luka says that it is difficult for him to decide which "suits him better" - air or small-calibre weapons. Nevertheless, he says with certainty that he achieves good results thanks to the well-organized training sessions, good conditions in the air shooting range and the support of the coaches.

Luka, Helena and Uroš have four training sessions a week. They say that the training sessions do not affect their learning, because they are well integrated with their curriculums. They particularly emphasize that excellent conditions and the opportunity to work with the athletes they look up to contribute to their success.
