Media Centre “Odbrana” Marked its Day
Today, in the Central Military Club a celebration was held to mark the Day of Media Centre “Odbrana” and 143rd anniversary of the military printing activity in Serbia. At the ceremony, the most significant recognition of the Media Centre “Odbrana” – the journalist award “Ivan Marković” was presented to a journalist of the daily newspaper “Politika” Milan Galović. The reward was given for the text “Pantsirs” protect the sky of Serbia day and night, published in “Politika” on 12th August 2021.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence Nebojša Stefanović PhD, who is currently paying the official visit to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, sent his congratulatory message on the occasion of 24th January – the Day of Media Centre “Odbrana” which reads:
“I congratulate 24th January – the Day of Media Centre “Odbrana” to all its members.
The publishing of the first issue of magazine “Warrior” back in 1879 marked the beginning of development of informative activity through written word within military system of defence, which after so much time, owing to the dedicated work of your predecessors and yours as well, has not and will not stop.
With your professional attitude to work, carefully listening to the desires and needs of the public, and following in the best possible way the modern trends in the field of not only information work, but the publishing work, you present to national and foreign reading public the collection of work of the Ministry of Defence and Serbian Armed Forces.
I congratulate this holiday to you, confident that owing to good thoughts, wise decisions and sharp pen, your shiniest moments are yet to come”.
Assistant Minister for Human Resources Katarina Tomašević presented the journalist award “Ivan Marković” to the journalist of “Politika” Milan Galović and congratulating the holiday reminded of the historical significance of the jubilee, the 143rd anniversary of the military printing activity, stressing that the one of a kind golden thread that had been linking through quill and word the “Warrior” and “Odbrana” for more than three centuries, was truly something to be proud of.
- It is important to point out that the Media Centre “Odbrana” of Department for Public Relations, apart from informative activity, has for a long time been the home of military ethos, culture, tradition and spirituality, a home with door wide open both for members of armed forces and all other good willed people – Assistant Minister Tomašević stressed.
She also pointed out that it was primarily owing to the dedication and enthusiasm of the members that the creative role of that house became ever more prominent, which was often referred to in the culture of the capital as the fortress on the theatre square, and a valuable monument which remembered because 143 years of writing was in fact as much years of remembering.
As she reminded, the Serbian Armed Forces are one of the institutions that enjoy the greatest confidence of the citizens of Serbia.
- Apart from being immensely proud of that, because the military does exist for its people and state – we are aware that the significant contribution to such “understanding” of the military by the people was also given by Media Centre “Odbrana”. With its great number of high quality titles, the Media Centre “Odbrana” as a military publishing house has been building year after year a recognisable image on the publishing map of Serbia, while the numerous events organised in its edifice, are placed at the very top of local cultural offer – stressed Assistant Minister Tomašević congratulating the holiday to the members of the Media Centre “Odbrana”.
Looking back on the year behind is, Director of Media Centre “Odbrana” Lieutenant Colonel Biljana Pašić singled out the most significant achievements of that establishment in all its three activities.
- Magazine “Odbrana” received the first prise for the best photograph published in European military newspapers and magazines from the European Military Press Association, in the competition of military press from the majority of European countries, and, during the International Military Games in the Russian Federation, we received the Special award for our exhibition – Lieutenant Colonel Pašić stressed.
As she underlined, to foster a tradition means to preserve the light and holiness of a historical place, to preserve its spirit, to prolong it life and make it last.
- That is our mission – to preserve the tradition, and in its spirit, to create new with every day – for some other future time in which our present will be the tradition – the Director of Media Centre “Odbrana” stated.
At today’s celebration, rewards were presented to the most significant associates in all areas of activities of the Media Centre “Odbrana”.
Special recognition, the Plaque of the Ministry of Defence for the associate of the year was awarded to the Institute for the protection of cultural heritage of the city of Belgrade. Owing to the cooperation with the Institute, and with the support of the Ministry of Defence and Ministry of Culture and Information, in 2021 an initiative was launched and a project started for the reconstruction of façade and restoration of the original appearance of the Central Military Club that embellished the House of Warriors. The plaque of the Ministry of Defence was conferred to Director of the Institute Olivera Vučković by Head of Department for Public Relations Colonel Mihailo Zogović PhD.
The recognition for the associate of the year in the area of exhibition activities of the Media Centre “Odbrana” went to the Heritage House and Museum of Yugoslavia, for a very demanding project of the exhibition of works of Petar Lubarda. The plaques of the Media Centre “Odbrana” were presented by Director of Media Centre “Odbrana” Lieutenant Colonel Biljana Pašić to Director of Heritage House Filip Brusić-Renaud and Senior Curator of the Museum of Yugoslavia Ana Panić.
The associate of the year in the area of journalistic – informative activities of the Media Centre “Odbrana” is Lieutenant Colonel Branislav Milosavljević PhD, the scientific associate of the Institute for Strategic Research who received the Plaque of the Media Centre “Odbrana” by the journalist of the magazine “Odbrana” Vladimir Vještić.
The majority of author’s and reviewer’s works in 2021 in the publishing activity of the Media Centre “Odbrana” was recorded by Colonel Dalibor Denda PhD, the scientific associate in the Institute for Strategic Research of the Ministry of Defence, which recommended him for the recognition for the best associate in the publishing activity. The plaque was presented to Colonel Denda by Head of Section for publishing activity Snežana Đokić MSc.
The celebration held in the Central Military Club included the showing of a film about the results of the work of Department for Public Relations and its establishments achieved in the previous year, and musical segment of the programme included the performance by opera artist Mina Gligorić, who had won third place representing Serbia in the event the Army of Culture in Moscow, accompanied by the orchestra of the Artistic Ensemble of the Ministry of Defence “Stanislav Binički”. The guests at today’s celebration had an opportunity to hear the melodies performed by the choir of the Artistic Ensemble "Stanislav Binički”, and members of Music Club of the Military Grammar School and Military Academy.
The Media Centre “Odbrana” marks its Day in memory of 24th January 1879 when the first issue of the military magazine “Warrior” was published in Serbia, whose tradition has been continued by the magazine “Odbrana”.
