Great Britain donates skiing equipment to Military Academy
As of this winter, new sets of ski touring equipment will be available to the Military Academy cadets. The equipment donated by the Ministry of Defence of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland to the Ministry of Defence of the Republic of Serbia is worth 50,000 pounds. On behalf of Ambassador Shan McLeod, the donation was handed over today, at the Military Academy Sports Centre by the UK Defence Attaché, Colonel Sacha Tomes. Addressing the audience on behalf of the Military Academy, Colonel Dragan Trifković, associate professor, said that in March this year, members of the Military Academy and the British Armed Forces Winter Warfare Centre carried out joint cold-weather training on Kopaonik, which was of great importance for broadening the curriculum by introducing ski touring training.
- Based on that experience, we have introduced ski touring in some of our programmes of study, as an important part of cold-weather training. Our main goal is to train infantry cadets in cold-weather warfare, on difficult terrain and in adverse weather conditions. We are grateful to the British instructors and the former Defence Attaché, Colonel Nik Ilić, who helped us organize and conduct that joint training. We are also grateful to the new Defence Attaché, Colonel Sacha Tomes, and his assistant, Mirko Pohulek, who have managed to procure skiing equipment that we need in a short time, despite the difficult circumstances. This donation, which comes just before the winter season, will enable our cadets to follow the new training programme - concluded Colonel Trifković.
The UK Defence Attaché, Colonel Sacha Tomes, says that this donation is an indicator of good cooperation between the two countries. - We are here today to hand over skiing equipment, as a donation from the British Ministry of Defence. This donation is part of the growing military cooperation between our two countries. It is also a follow-up to the last year's cold-winter training, and I hope it will be useful for the Serbian Armed Forces in their effort to develop new training concepts. I am really looking forward to seeing you use this equipment - said Colonel Tomes.
On behalf of the UK Ambassador Shan McLeod, Colonel Tomes received the Plaque of the Military Academy awarded to the Ambassador as a token of appreciation for the support provided.
