Minister of Defence and Chief of General Staff host reception on Veterans Day
Today, on the occasion of Veterans Day, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence Nebojša Stefanović, PhD, and Chief of the Serbian Armed Forces General Staff, General Milan Mojsilović, held a reception for veterans and representatives of veterans’ and traditional associations in the Guard Club in Topčider. The Minister said that he is also a descendant of veterans, people who fought for the freedom of the homeland.
He said that this is the first time he has had the privilege of attending the celebration of Veterans Day, in his capacity as the Minister of Defence. According to him, last year's ceremony was not held due to the Covid-19 pandemic, but the Ministry of Defence and the Serbian Armed Forces deeply appreciate everything that the veterans have done for Serbia. - I want to thank you. I’ve said the same thing today to the children who have participated in the "Our Soldier, Our Hero" project. Those children have written compositions, painted and made objects, showing in various ways how much they appreciate the military profession. I'm glad we have revived this tradition. President Vučić has reintroduced various military commemorative events and the celebration of glorious moments of Serbian history, and I am glad that we are continuing this practice and restoring respect throughout the country. I want to thank you for being a part of that history and making us all proud - the Minister pointed out.
He pointed out that veterans are an example of how deeply cherished and well-defended our country is. - The Ministry of Defence will do everything in its power in the coming period, although formally it is not within our competence. Whether it is within our competence or not, we will do everything we can to make your lives easier. Long live Serbia! - said Stefanović.
After the reception, Minister Stefnović and General Mojsilović met with the families of our national heroes - Major Milan Tepić, Second Lieutenant Borko Nikitović and Private Stojadin Mirković, who died heroically in action in Croatia in 1991. Speaking about the importance of celebrating Veterans Day, the Head of the Human Resources Sector’s Department for Tradition, Standard and Veterans, Colonel Dragan Milković, noted that today wreaths were laid and tribute was paid in several places and at several memorials, to fighters who gave their lives for freedom in the period from the Serbian-Turkish wars to the 1990s conflicts. He pointed out that Veterans Day, one of the biggest military holidays, is celebrated in order to keep alive the memory of fallen comrades and to preserve traditions in the Ministry of Defence and the Serbian Armed Forces.
