Centenary of "Karađorđevo" stud farm marked
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence Nebojša Stefanović, PhD, and Prime Minister Ana Brnabić have attended today the ceremony marking the centenary of the foundation of "Karađorđevo" state stud farm.
According to Prime Minister Ana Brnabić, on this day in 1921, exactly 100 years ago, "Karađorđevo" was founded by the Law on the Establishment of State Stud Farms, but its history had begun earlier, in late 19th century.
Referring back to the history and development of the "Karađorđevo" stud farm, Prime Minister Brnabić said that it was declared a public good of national importance in 1946 and established as the "Karađorđevo" Military Stud Farm, and since the early 1970s it has operated as "Karadjordjevo" Military Institution.
- During its rich history, the stud farm has bred several breeds of horses and played a key role in the preservation of Lipizzaner horses in Vojvodina and Serbia. The best proof of excellent horse breeding are numerous champion titles won at horse fairs and exhibitions. At the Novi Sad Fair in 2006, "Karađorđevo" was declared the supreme 20th century horsemanship champion - Prime Minister Brnabić emphasized.
According to her, the "Mladost" racecourse was opened on this stud farm in the early 80s, where military horse races also took place.
- Unfortunately, that beautiful tradition was discontinued in 2002. The "Karađorđevo" stud farm, which chronicled the rich history of the cavalry, was gradually being neglected. However, as Serbia began to recover its strength, so did Karađorđevo. In 2018, the Cavalry Platoon was re-established in the Serbian Armed Forces Guard Battalion, almost six decades after it had been disbanded. The cavalry, which had a long tradition in the Serbian army and an important role in the Balkan, the First and Second World Wars is regaining its original splendour - the Prime Minister pointed out.
In the same year, she added, the “Serbian Armed Forces Cup – Karađorđevo“ was established, with gallop and trotting races.
- The stud farm, whose life began in the late 19th century, is slowly regaining its splendour today and we will continuously invest in it so that Bačka Palanka and the generation of people who have invested their knowledge and emotions in this stud farm can be proud of it. In October this year, the Government of the Republic of Serbia declared "Karađorđevo" a state stud farm of special importance for the development of equestrian sports and tourism in the Republic of Serbia - Prime Minister Brnabić emphasized.
According to her, this year when we mark the 100th anniversary of its official foundation, we have committed ourselves to preserving and improving this institution in order to continue the tradition of equestrian sports in our country.
- As with everything else we do, in the case of "Karađorđevo", we wanted to show that we proudly remember our glorious tradition and that it is our duty to preserve and pass on the tradition to future generations, which we will do with great joy. Remembering and honouring the tradition and promoting the highest values for which our ancestors fought, are the principles that the Government of the Republic of Serbia and the President of the Republic of Serbia Aleksandar Vučić adhere to, because remembering and honouring the tradition are the basis for building a strong, successful and free Serbia. And this place, where we are today, preserves the rich history of our country and our military – the Prime Minister said.
- As the Prime Minister of the Republic of Serbia, I believe that designating Karađorđevo as a state stud farm of special importance for the development of equestrian sports and tourism in Serbia is a big step towards making this wonderful place one of the new tourist symbols of our country - Prime Minister Brnabić concluded.
During the tour of the museum and the Great Stable, the manager of "Karađorđevo", Nebojša Zlatanović, presented the history and tradition of the stud farm, recounting its most significant achievements during the century of its existence.
As part of the ceremony, the Guard’s cavalry platoon and the Police Brigade’s cavalry company held a parade, the "Kelebija" stud farm performed dressage, and combined driving using carriages drawn by a single horse and a pair of horses.
Deputy Chief of the Serbian Armed Forces General Staff, Lieutenant General Petar Cvetković and members of the Defence Minister’s and the Chief of the General Staff’s Collegiums also attended the ceremony.
