Minister Stefanović in talks with Chief of Cypriot National Guard



Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence, Nebojša Stefanović, PhD talked today to the Chief of the Cypriot National Guard, Lieutenant General Dimokritos Zervakis, who is on an official visit to the Republic of Serbia.

Minister Stefanović pointed out that Serbia and Cyprus cultivate traditionally friendly relations, based on historical closeness, mutual respect and understanding.
  General Zervakis reiterated that Cyprus maintains consistent position regarding the non-recognition of the so-called Kosovo and stressed the importance of mutual support in protecting sovereignty and respecting the principles of international law.
 
Minister Stefanović thanked Cyprus for its unwavering support for Serbia’s efforts to maintain territorial integrity and sovereignty and pointed out that our country also strongly supports the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the Republic of Cyprus.

He said that Serbia is also trying to help preserve peace and find a long-term sustainable and acceptable solution through the participation of members of the Serbian Armed Forces in UNFICYP (UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus) for which General Zervakis thanked him.

The interlocutors expressed mutual commitment to further promotion of defence cooperation, especially in the military to military and military-technical fields.

Minister Stefanović pointed out that participation in joint exercises is the best way to achieve interoperability and build the capabilities of the two armed forces, especially amidst the increasingly complex challenges at the global level.
 
He expressed hope that the ongoing talks over military-technical cooperation will result in the procurement of weapons and military equipment, to the mutual satisfaction of both sides.

Also, Stefanović sent an invitation to the Minister of Defence of the Republic of Cyprus for an official visit to the Republic of Serbia and said that the "Partner 2021" Fair, which is to be held in October, is a good opportunity for that.

General Zervakis expressed hope that the meetings with the Ministry of Defence and the Serbian Armed Forces officials will help intensify and improve the quality of defence cooperation.
