92nd anniversary of death of Dr. Rudolph Archibald Reiss marked

Today, a delegation representing the Ministry of Defence and the Serbian Armed Forces laid a wreath at the monument to Dr. Rudolph Archibald Reiss in Topčider Park in Belgrade, to mark the 92nd anniversary of his death.

Rudolph Archibald Reiss was born in today's Hausach on July 8, 1875, and died in Belgrade on August 8, 1929. He was a Swiss forensic scientist, publicist, doctor of chemistry and professor at the University of Lausanne. He distinguished himself as a criminologist by investigating crimes against the Serbs during the First World War.

At the invitation of the Serbian government, Reisse came to Serbia in 1914 to investigate the crimes committed against civilians by the Austro-Hungarian, German and Bulgarian forces. He wrote many books and papers on the subject.

He joined the Serbian Army in its retreat across Albania and Salonica Front, and marched into liberated Belgrade with the Morava Division in November 1918.

He grew fond of the Serbian “soldier-peasant” and the Serbian people and stayed in Serbia until his death.

He was buried at the Topčider Cemetery in Belgrade, while his heart was taken in an urn to Kajmakčalan, where it was buried together with other warriors who died on the Salonica front.
